How to Set the Victor® Metal Pedal Rat Trap

  1. Release the Arm Bar - Remove the staple and move it so the arm hangs over the back of the trap.
  2. Bait the Trap - Apply a high-protein bait, such as peanut butter or hazelnut spread, to the metal bait pedal. Use a Q-tip, toothpick or other tool to avoid transferring your scent.
  3. Hold Securely - Pull the kill bar back and hold it in place with your thumb.
  4. Set the Trap - Swing the arm bar over the kill bar and latch the bent end of the arm bar into the pedal's notch. Slowly release pressure from the kill bar until the arm bar holds the kill bar securely

Location, Location, Location

Set the baited trap in areas where you have noticed high levels of rodent activity. Rodents tend to travel along walls, so placement in this location often works best. For maximum effectiveness, use multiple traps, placed at 2 to 3 foot intervals to increase results. Place the trap with the baited end of the trap flush against the wall.

Five Stars

"Wow what a great product! I thought I needed a professional to get rid of my rat problem, but a few Victor rat traps get the job done. I don't know about other Victor products as the classic rat trap is my 1st purchase, but man does it work well! Just bait it with some peanut butter and these rodents don't stand a chance against the power of the kill bar. 10/10 product, thank you guys for providing us with such a cheap and effective way to make our lives better!"

  2. Move the arm bar to the back of the trap so it hangs over the back of the trap.
  3. Apply a small amount of high-protein bait, such as peanut butter, hazelnut spread or bacon to the metal pedal on the trap as shown. Use a Q-tip, toothpick or another tool to bait so your scent is not transferred onto the trap.

Helpfulness
My family has been using ...

My family has been using Victor traps for decades, they ARE THE BEST!! I've been using the rat traps for ground squirrels. Most of the time I do get the squirrels, but sometimes they are quicker than the trap. At night I make sure I snap all the traps that haven't been tripped so I don't kill something I don't want to. I hope Victor keeps making these Rat and Mice traps, as all other brands are useless, or very cruel ie: the glue/sticky traps.

Victor Rat Trap Quality Waaaayyyy Down
1
Apr 23, 2023
The quality of Victor rat traps has gone way down. These used to be the go to rat traps. I recently purchased four new traps, and they all had the wood split lengthwise after one or two times of the trap being used. Another one lost the piece of metal that holds down the trap. Unfortunately I tossed the three traps that broke, but you can see the split on the other one that lost the metal hold down piece in the photos. These traps are total garbage now, and I will never buy another one of these.

Have used these for both ...mice and rats

Nov 1, 2022
Have used these for both mice and rats successfully for years, and over the last 4 days have caught 8 rats in my 5 year old Victor!. Home Depot didn't have them in stock a while back so I purchased chinese knockoffs, and the rats ate the bait without tripping the trap. These are the only traps I will purchase going forward. period

This product is absolutely useless.

This product is absolutely useless. The design is so bad that you cannot set the trap it just doesn't set. It keeps snapping on your fingers and these rats traps are heavy duty you can easily brake a finger if you have small hands. The small metal tab has such small surface area that rats and mice can run right past the trap , eat the bait and not get trapped. Buy the plastic tab snap trap that has the big yellow trap tab . Those ones are the best traps I've used so far. I accidentally keep purchasing this produce because they mix them up on the shelves at hardware stores I wish they'd just discontinue this product its just horrible and is only purchased by accident . Going straight in the garage

I've used these traps forever!

I've used these traps forever, like my father and grandfather before me. I've even gotten so I can empty and reuse the traps, depending on how gnarly things went. Sometimes I have to adjust the bar holder thingy with a small pair of pliers so that the bar holds just firm enough. My trick is to use an almond covered with just a little peanut butter. They love it. My one piece of advice. Never get a mouse trap to do a rat trap's job. It just p's off the rat. It's an unpleasant job, but I'm happy to not use poison or sticky traps. All the best to all of you. Go Victor!

The best there is!

The best there is! Having moved out to the country, I use these to repel the yearly mice invasion from the field mice in the winter. They can be found at your local store for maybe 75 cents per? Maybe even cheaper! Set up a few packs around the house, and use a dime or half a dimes worth of cheese or peanut butter and it'll work nearly every time!

Victor Metal Pedal Rat Trap: Mechanism is too slow for quick rats
1
Jan 5, 2022
Victor Metal Pedal Rat Trap: I put this trap out at night, and the next morning found it had tripped but the bait was gone. I waited a couple of nights and put it out again. This time I set up a wildlife camera to record what was going on. The camera showed that it takes too long for the kill bar to deploy. When the rat takes the bait, the arm bar flips up and scares the rat. The rat's reflexes are so quick that it jumps out of the way as the kill bar is coming down. This mechanism works as a mouse trap, but it's too slow to catch rats.

Thank you for sharing this recent experience with this trap. When baiting, we suggest a small, pea sized amount on the bait pedal as too much bait can cause the trap to be less sensitive. We have shared these comments and concerns with our Product Managers for review. Lauren
Great traps work better front-to-front
5
Sep 6, 2021
Great traps work even better placed front-to-front. We have had good success using peanut butter and bird seed. Even better is two traps facing, touching each other so the bars close to the middle. This way the smart rats cannot simply trip a single trap, but get caught in the action as both bars hammer down and effectively kill the rats. We bait with peanut butter on the pedal and wood around it, arm it with the pedal up, then gently (always with hands to rear) place the traps front to front. Sprinkle bird seed for cover and camouflage.
