How to Set the Victor® Metal Pedal Rat Trap

  1. Release the Arm Bar - Remove the staple and move it so the arm hangs over the back of the trap.
  2. Bait the Trap - Apply a high-protein bait, such as peanut butter or hazelnut spread, to the metal bait pedal. Use a Q-tip, toothpick or other tool to avoid transferring your scent.
  3. Hold Securely - Pull the kill bar back and hold it in place with your thumb.
  4. Set the Trap - Swing the arm bar over the kill bar and latch the bent end of the arm bar into the pedal's notch. Slowly release pressure from the kill bar until the arm bar holds the kill bar securely

Location, Location, Location

Set the baited trap in areas where you have noticed high levels of rodent activity. Rodents tend to travel along walls, so placement in this location often works best. For maximum effectiveness, use multiple traps, placed at 2 to 3 foot intervals to increase results. Place the trap with the baited end of the trap flush against the wall.

Five Stars

"Wow what a great product! I thought I needed a professional to get rid of my rat problem, but a few Victor rat traps get the job done. I don't know about other Victor products as the classic rat trap is my 1st purchase, but man does it work well! Just bait it with some peanut butter and these rodents don't stand a chance against the power of the kill bar. 10/10 product, thank you guys for providing us with such a cheap and effective way to make our lives better!"

Rat Trap Instructions
  1. Release the arm bar from the staple.
  2. Move the arm bar to the back of the trap so it hangs over the back of the trap.
  3. Apply a small amount of high-protein bait, such as peanut butter, hazelnut spread or bacon to the metal pedal on the trap as shown. Use a Q-tip, toothpick or another tool to bait so your scent is not transferred onto the trap.
  4. Pull the kill bar back and hold it in place with your thumb.
  5. Take the arm bar over the kill bar and latch the end of the arm bar on the metal pedal as shown.
  6. Place the trap where you have seen signs of rodent activity or along the wall where rodents primarily travel. The end of the trap where the metal pedal is baited should be placed flush against the wall.
  7. After the rat is caught, properly dispose of the dead rodent. The trap can either be discarded or reused.

Helpfulness
Great traps work better front-to-front

Great traps work even better placed front-to-front. We have had good success using peanut butter and bird seed. Even better is two traps facing, touching each other so the bars close to the middle. This way the smart rats cannot simply trip a single trap, but get caught in the action as both bars hammer down and effectively kill the rats. We bait with peanut butter on the pedal and wood around it, arm it with the pedal up, then gently (always with hands to rear) place the traps front to front. Sprinkle bird seed for cover and camouflage.

Quick Kills

Outstanding performance; I set out 2 rat snaps, baiting with white cheddar cheese, and next morning discovered both had scored kills. The two rats were at least 2-3 pounds each, breeding females probably. I felt blessed; praise God for Victor Snap Traps!

How to do it

Excelent product, first time the bait was gone, used an almond, then cut the almond and used some tape, leaving only a small portion free so the rat would fiddle with It. Instant kill. Great product.

DAMN GOOD PRODUCT

Hi, Woody here. After reading the above comments, here is mine. I placed eight [8] of the large wooden metal pedal rat traps around a house and deck area. One of them is about 40 years old and rusty. The spring is still tough though and functioning. It caught a large rat that even tried to go back into the hole under the deck. It only made it half way. Now, a brand new [out of the package] wooden, metal pedal rat trap caught a large rat BUT somehow the rat got out and died 4 feet away! I think what happened is the rat was injured right behind the head BUT somehow managed to eventually escape because the striker bar is NEW AND SLIPPERY! Also, it has been raining here for the last week and the wetness could have added to the slipperiness! If there was some way to add a serrated edge to it, that would HOLD the rat in place so that it couldn't slide out after the striker bar hits it! Overall, new or old, those traps hit hard and kill quickly! In each case, [my trick], I attach a one inch long by half inch wide strip of green, thin, plastic scouring pad material with a slit in the center, to attach to the metal spike and squeeze it down to hold it. Then, i compress fresh peanut butter all thru it and leave a mound on top. This forces the rat to get in deeper and up on the metal pan to get at the food. The scouring pad helps activate the trigger by movement of the rat. You have to force the rat to move or pull on the trigger! The scouring pad strip accomplishes that. Not rocket science but as a licensed trapper here in New York State, just trying to think "out of the box" so to speak! Anyway, I am planning to buy MORE of these wooden rat traps with the metal trigger pan. They work damn good for me! Thankyou for your time and product.

Great Traps

Love this trap, tried others but keep coming back to the best. One issue I had recently is stolen bait without springing trap. I figure it was my bait being oily, I've been using a Slim Jim. Hit the bait paddle with a rasp to get some purchase, worked great!! Caught two rats at sametime.

We had no problem

We had no problem using the current wooden metal-pedal traps sold by Victor. We used a piece of salami as bait, and voila! Came out the next day, rat was dead, removed the rat and now it's reset with new bait. I also wanted to compare them to the black plastic traps sold by Tomcat, which we also had success with, using spam in the tray. But the Victor is so much cheaper, but a bit more challenging to set. But once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy. The advantage of the Tomcat is that they are a dark color and blend in with my dark mulch in the garden.

Does not kill the rat
1
Aug 31, 2019
I bought two traps from a big box store. Rats have been decimating my vegetable garden. First time, the rat was killed but was found two feet from trap dead. Second time the trap hit right at the base of the rat's head, but did not kill it. It was running around my yard with the trap. Had to dispatch it myself. The other trap sprung but there was no rat there. All the other times, the bait (peanut butter) was gone and the traps did not trigger. Not sure what I am doing wrong. These traps seem to weak to kill the pest (5 inches long nose to base of tail). Would not buy again. Need a better solution,

Trap not effective, springs not strong enough, trigger not good
2
Apr 30, 2019
Unfortunately I have to agree with most of the reviewers. The trap is not effective anymore (last two years or so). The biggest issue is the spring strength; it is now much weaker than used to be. Couple of times had to kill rats hit by the trap myself, as the rat was slowly recovering from the impact - the spring is not strong enough. The old traps were perfect, why did you change it?. The trigger is also not as good as used to be. Please go back to your original design if you can, but if you cannot, from whatever reason, at least change the springs for stronger.

Victor Kill Trap - too hard for rat to trip
1
Apr 25, 2019
I've placed the Victor rat trap out and every night the rat takes all the peanut butter and comes back the next night. I tried impaling an almond - the rat chewed the almond right down and still the trap did not trip. Seems I am the only one that can trip the trap. Very unhappy after using and resetting the Victor Snap Trap for rats over the past 5 nights.

Hello Liz, Thank you for sharing this feedback. We apologize that this is occurring and would like to offer assistance. We recommend baiting with a very small amount of peanut butter, approximately that which would fit on the end of a toothpick. The use of too much bait may cause the trap to be less sensitive. This trap is backed by a 30 day return policy and covered under a one year warranty for replacement. Please feel free to contact us at 1-855-5-VICTOR (1-855-584-2867) with any questions.
