Victor® Mouse Trap-Powered Car Competition: Widener University School of Engineering
LITITZ, PA—Feb. 6, 2014— In1898, Victor®, a recognized world leader in rodent control, unveiled their iconic wood-based wire snap trap and homeowners have been using them to effectively catch mice ever since. Recently, the Victor® mouse traps were used to catch something of a different nature: trophies and bragging rights at the annual Widener University School of Engineering Mousetrap Competition in Chester, PA.
Widener Engineering has been hosting the Mousetrap Competition, a closely contested rivalry, for more than 30 years. Each year, high school students from throughout the mid-Atlantic region compete to build a mouse trap-powered device. This year, several hundred high school students participated in the challenge which required innovative design, detailed planning…and a Victor® mouse trap.
"Victor® was the proud sponsor of the 2014 Mousetrap Competition," says Andrea Cober, Category Development Associate at Victor®. "It's a great event and really challenges students to get creative and think strategically. There were so many clever mouse trap- powered designs entered into the competition, every student deserves to be recognized for their ingenuity."
To prepare for the competition, the student teams were given a design challenge and set of specifications. Using the guidelines, the students were encouraged to "think" like practicing engineers to plan and create mouse trap-powered catapult devices powered solely by a Victor® Metal Pedal Mouse Trap. The winners were declared by a points system, based on which devices had the best aim. This year the top two teams hailed from Delsea Regional High School in Franklinville, New Jersey.
The top selling mouse trap in the world, Victor® reliable wooden snap traps feature a kill bar that is triggered by the slightest movement, snapping the trap closed for a quick, humane kill. The traps contain no chemicals or poisons and are safe to use around children and pets; however, all rodent traps should be used with caution. Made in the USA, the Victor® snap traps used at the Mousetrap Competition are constructed from FSC® certified wood that originated from environmentally controlled and certified forests.
"The Mousetrap Competition highlighted students being inventive in science at a competition offered by one of the country's oldest engineering programs," says Cober. "It also highlighted the fact that you can catch more than a mouse with a Victor® mouse trap."
