Victor® The Black Box Gopher Trap

Gopher holes popping up is probably one of the last sights you want to see in your yard. With the Victor® the Black Box Gopher Trap, you can be prepared when the worst happens. The trap is constructed of weather-resistant plastic and galvanized steel to offer superior durability for use in the outdoors. When used correctly, traps produce a catch within 48 hours. It is best to move the trap to another location in the runway if you do not catch a gopher in this timeframe.

Effective and Versatile

Effective and Versatile

This convenient choker loop-style trap quickly and effectively kills nuisance gophers before they can continue wreaking havoc on your property. When properly placed in the runway, the trap will snare the unsuspecting gopher in the spring-triggered loop. To offer versatile placement, the Black Box can be used in all soil types, including sandy soil.

Easy to Set

For your convenience, the trap comes fully assembled and ready-to use and features an easy-set design that you can activate with just one click! Once the trap is in place near the gopher activity, simply press or step down on the set lever until you hear it click. The click indicates that the kill bar is now active.

Unique Design

Unique Design

To offer peace of mind, when installed properly inside a gopher tunnel, all the traps moving parts are located safely below ground away from children and pets. It’s a great alternative to convention wire claw and box traps, as well as chemicals and poisons.

How to Use

  1. Remove and expose the active mound or tunnel. Peel back the lawn to preserve it for use after catching the gopher.
  2. Remove just enough dirt to fit the trap. For best results, position two traps back to back.
  3. Set the trap by using two thumbs or by stepping on the set lever until it clicks into place.
  4. Place the traps in the tunnel. Trap opening must be level with the bottom of the tunnel.
  5. Cover the trap with loose soil so it appears as if it is part of the runway.
  6. After the trap has fired, remove the gopher if desired.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the Victor® Black Box Gopher Trap. We’re sorry to hear it hasn’t worked as expected. For best results, the trap should be placed directly in an active gopher tunnel with the trigger positioned in line with the travel path, and the tunnel should be covered to block out light. Packing soil around the trap to secure it and checking for fresh activity can also improve effectiveness.
New style have been a waste of time and money.

I have some of the original type with the hooks but when I had a lot of gophers in my field, I bought some of the newer style, thinking that this was going to be some improvement on the previous design. I have to say in the past 3 years, I have caught only one gopher in one of the new style traps while the old style ones seem to work without fail. One of the hooks was lost on an old one and I fashioned a new one with a piece of clothes hanger and it catches as good as it did before...which is great because the new style are absolutely a waste of time and money. And yeah, that small piece of plastic retainer broke off making it garbage plastic and I am not going to buy any more of this style. Would love to see Victor go back to the old style....charge a little more for it as I would pay to have the old style again. I am finding new mounds daily, and setting my traps...usually getting 1-2 a day, but onl;y in the old style. No point setting the new style ones. Might see if I can find a fabricator to make up some of the old style ones before something happens to them.

We’re sorry to hear the newer Victor® Black Box Gopher Trap design hasn’t performed as well for you. Proper tunnel placement and alignment are important so the trigger engages when the gopher pushes through. Ensuring the soil is firm around the trap can also help the mechanism activate correctly. We appreciate your detailed feedback — it will be shared with our product team as we continue working to improve effectiveness and durability.
Cheap, less Effective trap compared to the old version

Compared to the old version, this version of the Gopher, or should I say, Squirrel trap is not durable. Specifically you can see the single point of failure on the pictures of this cheap plastic trap, it is the hook in the middle top that hold down the top and wire "loop"; a key part of the tripping mechanism. This plastic catch nearly always snaps off quickly. I've even had traps that break the first time I try to set them. The old traps used two ridged wires with bent L shapes the hooked together. This made the old trap more sensitive to movement, more durable and worked much better. This new trap, made of plastic, while it breaks easily, also is less sensitive witch results in it being less effective. To make this version of the trap work better, I put two traps together, bottom to bottom and tape they together, making a sort of supper double trap... This setup seems to work better but nothing like the old version. I also put two of the old traps together bottom to bottom and it would often times catch two squirrels in the same day...

Thanks for your reviews!!

Thank you ALL for your honest reviews. I'm going with a Gonzo Dead-End gopher trap instead. It's good to know that Victor is now controlled by moronic penny pinchers that would rather sell useless garbage than functional products. It's a shame, but such is the world we live in now. Pure incompetence is rewarded instead of shut down immediately. I'll steer clear of this brand from now on.

I bought 3 of these traps and have yet to catch a gopher. They take the bait but it doesn’t get set. It’s also hard to set by hand, often have to use my foot. My impression is that it’s not sensitive enough to catch anything.

Tried everything ( poison/ ultra sonic/ coffee grounds) but too cheap to buy a black box. Finally gave in! Two hours after receiving, I got my gopher!!! Took two green bean , broke them in half and put in the back of the trap.

I am very disappointed in this model. I lost the trigger pin to my original black box and had to buy a new one. I have set it several times and the gopher just fills the box with dirt. I used to be 80% successful with the original version of the black box. So far I am 0 for 10 setting this new one. Don't buy it.

This new version is complete garbage. Have zeo kills with this update. I reverted to the GEN1 of this version, 0625, a catch/kill every time when setting it up.

I have had no success with this trap. I have set and reset this trap and the gopher just fills it with dirt. The first time I set this a gopher entered the trap a few minutes after I set it. I heard it in the trap and could see it’s nose at the hole at the end of the trap and it never triggered. I have tried this at multiple holes 4 or 5 times each. After that I gave up and used the old model of the Victor Black Box Gopher Trap and caught the gopher on the first or second try. This new model is a piece of junk. Hey Victor bring back the old model as I will never buy another one of these. You would think that you would have already done that with all the negative reviews for this new one over the last couple of years.
