My brand new zapper, when the switch is flipped on, the light flashes green and immediately buzzes. Why would a completely new unit do this?
Question by: Grant on Oct 28, 2021, 4:45 PM
If the trap is flashing green when turned on, the trap is armed and ready. It will often buzz as well.

My rat zapper has worked well for years. Now when I turn it on, it flashes green like normal, but a few seconds later the red light comes on even though the trap is empty. How do I cure this?
Question by: rick on Jan 2, 2025, 12:55 PM
Hi, thank you for your question. When the red light comes on, it indicates that the batteries need to be replaced.

Unit turns on/tests with one green light, then goes off and buzzes for a few seconds properly per your direction. Is there a way to safely/physically test it will 'zap'. I've had a couple units in place for a couple months and am missing the mice I know are present. I understand they may choose not to go in and I'm trying different bait and location methods. I just want to be sure they're not going in and it's not activating. THANKS!

Thank you for contacting Victor.
Regarding the Victor® Rat Zapper Classic Electronic Rat Trap, we do not recommend testing the trap in any way. As long as the light flashes correctly when the trap is first turned on, it should be functioning properly.
Baiting Tips:
Apply a small amount of high-protein bait, such as peanut butter, bacon, or chocolate, to the back wall of the trap, away from the metal plates.
Use a Q-tip or another tool to apply the bait to avoid transferring your scent.
Position the trap on a flat surface against a wall where you have seen signs of rodent activity. The trap should be placed lengthwise, with the entrance nearest to the wall.
Let us know if you need any further assistance.
Warm regards

I have an old rat zapper that gave up the ghost. It worked really well and I had caught several rats with it.
A few months ago, I bought three more new ones. (One I accidentally left out the rain and it’s no longer working, my fault.) The other two no rats have been going in but finally last night after having it out there for a few weeks with bait and putting some bacon grease in it, I had a rat go in. I have it on camera going all the way in, a giant flash and rat running away.
I’m so mad because now nobody’s going to go in them again, they seem to talk to each other.
What went wrong?

Thank you very much for contacting us.
It sounds like the trap may have triggered incorrectly. This can happen if the bait is placed directly on the metal plates, which may activate the trap too early and fail to catch the rat. Please make sure to place the bait behind the metal plates and not directly on them.
We also recommend the following steps for best results:
Use brand new, high-quality batteries.
Place the trap on a flat surface along a wall where rodent activity has been observed.
Position the trap lengthwise, with the entrance facing the wall.
Make sure the area is clean and free of dust or debris that could affect the trap’s function.

My rat zapper works great. However, I need to place it in locations where I can't see the light unless I pull the trap out and look at it, which requires climbing a ladder. I've heard of some kind of signal wire that turns on a light after the trap has triggered, so the trap can be monitored more easily. Do you have such a thing for this rat trap?
Question by: Ann on May 16, 2025, 1:30 PM
No, this trap does not support external signal wires or remote indicator lights.

I have used many of these traps for years in multiple locations inside my stable, well away from any hay debris, in the garage and the pool pump area. I have had tremendous success in the stable where the creek rats invade my hay and furniture storage each year and limited success in the garage and pool area where we predominantly have more mice than rats. I have shared my success with many others who also love this trap. In the last year, many of the traps, mainly the newer ones show low powered batteries immediately upon my installing them. The ones that don't show the red light seem only to get the babies and the bigger rats run in and out of the traps. I have tried many brands of AA batteries with no change. Has there been some kind of change in battery quality? I see no difference whatsoever between Kirkland or the Energizer MAX Alkaline. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you very much for contacting us.
We truly appreciate your continued trust in our traps and the helpful feedback you’ve shared. We're glad to hear they've served you well over the years, especially in your stable.
For best performance, use 4 AA batteries only — do not use rechargeable batteries, as their lower voltage affects the trap’s ability to work properly. Always place bait at the back of the trap, avoiding contact with the metal plates. If your trap still isn't working correctly, please note it is covered by a one-year warranty for manufacturing defects.

My Rat Zapper turns on, buzzes then the red light blinks 5 times, then stops. These are new batteries. Is it not working or what's going on? Trying to use it and the mice are eating the bait.
Question by: Greg Fulk on Jun 10, 2025, 6:04 PM
The 5 red blinks mean the trap is sensing a false trigger or issue with the kill chamber. Clean the trap with a dry cloth, make sure there’s no debris, and that the metal plates are dry. Also, ensure the bait is placed behind the metal plates, not on them.
