Facts About Wasps, Hornets and Yellow Jackets

As you search for wasp, hornet or yellow jacket killers, it’s best to understand what it is these insects are after in your home and yard. Here is some basic information about each of them:

What are Wasps? Wasp is the general term for all of the bee-like insects in the zoological classification system used by scientists. Technically, wasps are not bees and the two only share a few similarities – a stinger and wings. Some wasps have yellow-and-black banding, too. In general, wasps are considered more aggressive than bees. Depending on the species, a wasp may feed on nectar, sweets, other insects or carrion.

What are Hornets? There are 22 species of hornets worldwide and the one you’re most likely to see in your yard is the European hornet. This hornet species is often aggressive around food sources and protective of its nest, making it a regular pest for homeowners. With that in mind, keep trash cans away from areas of high human activity, especially in the autumn when hornets are most aggressive.

What are Yellow Jackets? The various yellow jacket species are all predator wasps, and given their coloration and size, they are often mistakenly called “bees.” Yellow jackets are attracted to yards where they build nests -- underground for some species and hanging paper nests for others. They also love to raid waste cans for food. In a totally natural setting, yellow jackets usually eat nectar, scavenge for dead insects and actively hunt any arthropod smaller than them.
