Moss occurs in shady, wet areas with acidic, low fertility soil. It is a low, growing plant that sprouts from spores and will fill in bare areas in your lawn. It will obstruct normal lawn grass shoots because it impairs water movement in the soil.

Algae are green or various colored growths found on twigs, limbs and trunks. The growth may be leaf-like, hairy or scale-like. It can attack fruit and nut trees and ornamental shrubs. Algae can also grow on patios, decks and fences.
